🍂🦃 Reflecting on the 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Dinner: A Celebration of Gratitude and Community 🦃🍂

On November 23, 2024, SHUT UP Until You There (SUUYT) hosted its 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Dinner at Nativity Prep in Boston, MA. This heartwarming event brought together approximately 240 shelter recipients from three local shelters to experience the spirit of Thanksgiving in a culturally inclusive and welcoming environment. The evening was a celebration of gratitude, unity, and hope, offering not just a meal but a moment of respite and connection for families navigating the challenges of a new beginning.

A Feast Rooted in Tradition

The dinner featured a menu that celebrated the richness of Haitian culinary traditions while embracing the essence of Thanksgiving. Guests enjoyed turkey served Haitian-style, alongside classic Haitian dishes like diri djondjon (black mushroom rice) and salade russe (a vibrant mix of beets, potatoes, and carrots). This thoughtful blend of flavors symbolized the merging of cultures and the importance of shared experiences.

Care Bags for Families

Thanks to the generous support of Circle of Hope and Easy Care Pediatrics, each family left the event with a thoughtfully prepared care bag. These care bags included warm coats for every family member, hygiene products, and other essential items, ensuring both comfort and dignity for our guests. This initiative reflected our commitment to addressing the holistic needs of the families we serve.

Childcare and a Mental Break for Parents

Understanding the pressures faced by those parents living in shelters, SUUYT provided childcare during the dinner, thanks to the dedication of volunteers, including those from Massachusetts Immigration & Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA). This effort offered parents a much-needed mental break, allowing them to relax and enjoy the evening, knowing their children were cared for in a safe and fun environment.
